GA-ASI and MBDA Plan SPEAR Integration for MQ-9B and Gambit 6

GA-ASI and MBDA signed an agreement at Farnborough 2026 to pursue SPEAR integration on MQ-9B and Gambit 6.

GA-ASI and MBDA Plan SPEAR Integration for MQ-9B and Gambit 6

The agreement aims to equip two uncrewed aircraft families with MBDA’s next-generation stand-off precision weapon.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and MBDA have signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue the integration of SPEAR precision-strike weapons onto the MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft and the Gambit 6 collaborative combat aircraft.

The agreement was signed by GA-ASI President David R. Alexander and MBDA UK Managing Director Chris Allam during the Farnborough International Airshow on 21 July 2026.

Under the memorandum, the companies intend to work together to enable the MQ-9B and Gambit 6 to carry and employ the SPEAR weapon family.

The announcement represents an integration commitment rather than a completed weapon qualification programme. Neither company has disclosed a flight-test schedule, customer contract, production order or planned date for operational service.

Building on the Protector and Brimstone Programme

GA-ASI and MBDA already cooperate on the integration of the Brimstone missile onto the United Kingdom’s Protector RG Mk1.

Protector RG Mk1 is the Royal Air Force configuration of the MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft.

GA-ASI described the proposed SPEAR integration as a continuation of the working relationship established through the Protector programme.

This prior cooperation may reduce some integration risk, particularly in areas such as weapons interfaces, aircraft software, mission planning and certification. However, SPEAR integration onto the wider MQ-9B family and Gambit 6 would still require dedicated engineering, testing and customer approval.

What Is SPEAR?

SPEAR is MBDA’s next-generation air-launched surface-attack weapon.

MBDA describes it as a miniature cruise missile designed to engage targets beyond the horizon while allowing the launch aircraft to remain farther from hostile air-defence systems.

The weapon is intended to provide precision effects against a broad range of targets while supporting a comparatively high weapon loadout because of its compact dimensions.

MBDA stated ahead of Farnborough 2026 that initial production of SPEAR had begun and that the first operational missile deliveries were expected in early 2027.

The weapon is being developed primarily for the British F-35 programme and has also undergone integration work involving the Eurofighter Typhoon.

MQ-9B Integration

MQ-9B is GA-ASI’s long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft family and includes the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian configurations.

The platform is designed for persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions over land and maritime environments.

Adding SPEAR would expand the aircraft’s potential stand-off strike capability.

Rather than operating close to defended targets, an MQ-9B equipped with SPEAR could theoretically release weapons from a greater distance. The practical engagement envelope would depend on aircraft configuration, weapon integration, mission planning, datalinks and customer-specific operating requirements.

The MQ-9B is already in service or on order with several countries. Any SPEAR integration would still require separate procurement and approval decisions from individual operators.

The memorandum does not confirm that any current MQ-9B customer has ordered SPEAR-equipped aircraft.

Gambit 6 and Collaborative Combat Missions

The second aircraft identified in the agreement is Gambit 6.

GA-ASI describes Gambit 6 as an uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft optimised for attack missions.

Potential roles include:

  • Electronic warfare
  • Suppression of enemy air defences
  • Destruction of enemy air defences
  • Stand-off precision strike
  • Operations alongside crewed combat aircraft

Integrating SPEAR could provide Gambit 6 with a compact stand-off weapon suited to missions against defended targets.

This would support a broader operational concept in which uncrewed aircraft carry weapons, sensors or electronic-warfare systems into higher-risk environments while crewed aircraft remain farther from immediate threats.

However, Gambit 6 remains a developing platform. Publicly available information does not yet confirm an operational customer, completed weapon integration or production schedule.

From Memorandum to Operational Capability

The agreement establishes industrial cooperation, but several stages must be completed before SPEAR can become operational on either aircraft.

These are likely to include:

  • Aircraft and weapon interface design
  • Software integration
  • Carriage and separation analysis
  • Ground testing
  • Captive-carry trials
  • Flight-release testing
  • Guidance and datalink validation
  • Airworthiness and weapons certification
  • Customer evaluation and procurement approval

The schedule and cost of these activities have not been announced.

The companies stated that their objective is to create a capability that could be fielded relatively quickly by combining existing aircraft with a weapon approaching operational readiness.

That remains a development objective rather than a confirmed delivery timetable.

UAV Intelligence Assessment

The proposed SPEAR integration reflects the expanding role of uncrewed aircraft in stand-off strike missions.

MQ-9-class aircraft were initially associated primarily with persistent surveillance and the employment of shorter-range guided weapons. Integrating compact cruise missiles would allow these platforms to engage targets from greater distance and operate with reduced exposure to some air-defence threats.

For MQ-9B, SPEAR could strengthen the platform’s relevance in higher-threat environments. It would not make the aircraft inherently survivable against advanced integrated air-defence systems, but it could reduce the need to approach defended targets as closely as existing short-range weapons require.

For Gambit 6, the agreement is strategically more significant.

A collaborative combat aircraft equipped with stand-off weapons could operate as an additional magazine, electronic-warfare platform or forward strike asset within a crewed-uncrewed formation.

This could increase the number of weapons available to a mission commander without placing additional pilots directly inside the highest-risk area.

The compact nature of SPEAR may also allow an aircraft to carry several weapons, improving persistence and target flexibility.

Nevertheless, the present announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that either aircraft has completed SPEAR integration.

No flight trials, customer orders or operational fielding dates were announced.

The programme’s significance will therefore depend on whether the memorandum progresses into funded engineering work, successful weapons testing and confirmed procurement by one or more military customers.

Strategic Outlook

The agreement strengthens the industrial relationship between a major American uncrewed aircraft manufacturer and a European missile company.

This could be particularly relevant for European MQ-9B operators seeking weapons produced within the European defence industrial base.

It also illustrates how collaborative combat aircraft programmes are moving beyond sensors and electronic warfare toward precision-strike roles.

Future combat formations may combine crewed fighters, remotely piloted aircraft and autonomous or semi-autonomous collaborative aircraft, each carrying different sensors, communications systems and weapons.

SPEAR integration onto both MQ-9B and Gambit 6 would support this type of distributed combat architecture.

The next decisive milestone will be the announcement of a funded integration programme or customer-backed flight-test campaign.
